The DeFries lab is housed within the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology at Columbia University. Their aim is to develop the scientific underpinnings for sustainable land use that balances societal needs for food and other necessities with conservation of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and healthy environments. The lab uses remote sensing, GIS, surveys, and field measurements in a variety of tropical landscapes.
EDF, based in New York, USA, aims to preserve the natural systems on which all life depends through its work on ecosystems, energy, climate change mitigation, and health services. EDF’ approaches are multidisciplinary, and combine science, economics, policy, law, technology, and social innovation with the power of market-based solutions, advocacy, partnerships, and corporate leadership.
FES is based in Anand, Gujarat, India and works towards conservation of nature and natural resources through collective action of local communities. The crux of FES efforts lie in locating forests and other natural resources within the prevailing economic, social and ecological dynamics in rural landscapes.
ICRAF is a research organization based in Kenya, Nairobi. ICRAF aims to work towards mitigating tropical deforestation, land depletion, and rural poverty through improved agroforestry systems. Its goal is to initiate and assist in the generation and dissemination of appropriate agroforestry technologies for resource-poor farmers and other land users.
